The Rest of Us

Looking back on my high school days, I remember those kids who seemed to “get it.” They understood why they were there and what they were hoping to accomplish. Then there was the rest of us, messing up and learning life’s lessons the hard way. What made the kids that seemed to have it all together different? I believe they were either born with certain “life skills” or somebody taught them those skills – maybe a parent, grandparent, teacher, coach, or sibling. The rest of us certainly weren’t learning these skills. Not in my school, at least.

Some say life experiences are the best teachers, but I’m here to tell you they can be expensive.  Learning life skills formally in school prevented tragic conflicts in my and others’ teenage years and beyond.  The truth is some people have to be on heightened alert to face conflicts at school, home, and in their communities at all times. Middle school can be a difficult time. It begins and ends with a considerable transition for students. Stepping into a new environment after years of elementary school and ultimately ending with the leap into high school, these brief years in between play a formative role in a student’s education and personal growth.  However, I believe that if I had learned certain life skills at a younger age, it could have made my years in middle school a better experience.
